Where to farm Growing a crop Watering cans Crops The Farming skill Farmer Russel

Where to farm

Crops grow on farm patches and in plant pots.

  • A house's own land. Farm patches on a house's land belong to the house: its owner and subowners tend them, and they change hands with it.
  • Land plots. A land plot turns an empty floor tile of your own house into a farm patch that yields like any other. Buy one for 10 coins in the shop's House tab, or for 2 task points from the Task Master. A house holds up to 6 land plots. To take one back, choose Pack on it in the right-click menu; whatever grows on it is lost. If you lose the house, your plots come back to you.
  • Plant pots. Buy a plant pot with soil for 250 gold, put it down in a house and plant in it. Up to 6 planted pots fit in a house, on top of the land plots, and a planted pot can only be moved within its house. A pot yields less than a patch, and Elderward trees don't fit in one.

Growing a crop

Farm patch → Fertilized → Watered → Sprouts → Young → Grown → Ripe

  1. Fertilize, if you want to. It must be done before watering, and once per crop.
  2. Plant a seed by using it on the patch or pot.
  3. Water it once with a full watering can. Nothing dries out, and one watering is all a crop needs.
  4. Wait. The crop grows from the moment it is watered, even while you are offline. Use or look at it to see how long it has left.
  5. Harvest the ripe crop with a herblore knife from your backpack. Any knife will do on a farm.

Farmer Russel and Alchemist Aldric sell the seeds, fertilizer, compost, pots and the copper tools. Chef Laurent sells the vegetable seeds.

Watering cans

Fill a can at any water, or at a draw well: use the well first to draw its bucket up, then use the can on it. A full can holds several waterings. A better can makes the crops it waters grow faster and gives a chance of one more ingredient when they are harvested.

What each plant gives is listed on the Alchemy page.

  • Crystalbloom and the Elderward trees need farming level 60 to plant. Their harvests give their seeds back 10% of the time, and a farmed Elderward tree always gives its fruit.
  • Emberthorn needs two empty farm patches side by side.
  • B and A plants give no seeds back: buy new ones for every crop.
  • "Halved" is the farming level from which that tier pays half its experience.

Vegetables

The vegetables are for cooking and grow only on farms. They never count as outgrown.

Carrot, potato, onion, garlic and chili seeds cost 200 gold at Chef Laurent's, tomato, corn and pumpkin seeds 500.

Yields are before fertilizer, your can and your knife, each of which can add one more. On a farm a knife's own bonuses count for half.

The Farming skill

Farming starts at level 1 and goes up to 100, shown in your Skills window under Fishing. It decides which cans you may use and when you may plant crystalbloom and Elderward trees.

Farmer Russel

Farmer Russel

Aurelia

Sells every seed you can buy, fertilizer, compost, plant pots and the copper watering can and herblore knife. He buys nothing.

His field. Ask Russel about his field and he gives you a sunpetal seed, a fertilizer, a full copper watering can and a copper herblore knife to keep. On one of his patches, fertilize, plant and water: the crop ripens the moment you water it. Only you can cut it, and only for 4 minutes. The harvest is exactly what a gatherer's elixir needs: 3 sunpetal petals, 2 sunpetal honey, a gloomberry husk and a gloomberry stalk.

Multi-tools

A herblore knife or watering can inside a multi-tool, such as the whacking driller of fate, works just as it does from your backpack. With both inside, a crop waiting for water takes the can and anything else takes the knife.
